An alternative to traditional open back and neck surgery, laser spine surgery is an endoscopic procedure used to treat conditions such as bulging disc, herniated disc, pinched nerve, and much more. Because it causes less trauma to the body than traditional surgery, this technique is performed on an outpatient basis, results in a faster recovery time, and has a lower chance of complications like infection and scarring.
Laser spine surgery begins with a small incision, into which doctors insert a small tube. Then, progressively larger tubes are slipped over top of this initial tube to slowly and gently increase the size of the opening, nudging muscle aside rather than cutting or tearing it as is done in traditional back and neck surgery. Once the final tube is in place and internal tubes have been removed, the surgeon feeds endoscopic tools through it, including a tiny camera, which provides visual access to the surgery site in great detail on a high definition monitor. Using a laser, irrigation, suction, and other surgical instruments, the doctors then remove the bone, disc material, or other tissue causing symptoms.
After the minimally invasive procedure, the patient is usually released to return to their home or nearby hotel room for rest and recuperation. Within a few days of the procedure, he or she visits Laser Spine Institute for a post-operative exam, and most are back to normal activity in just a few weeks.
